BRIEF HISTORY OF HM/TWL

In 1948, Hindustan Motors (HM) shifted their assembly plant from Port Okha in Gujarat to Uttarpara in the Hooghly district of West Bengal and strengthened their manufacturing capacity in the automobile segment. Situated in a sprawling township extending upto 743 acres, in the suburbs of Kolkata, the plant has the distinction of being the manufacturer of India’s first indigenous car - the Ambassador, tailor made for Indian roads.

Besides the Ambassador in the passenger car segment, the Uttarpara plant also manufactures the Contessa and has diversified into the production of auto components, auto-parts and multi utility vehicles like the Trekker, Pushpak and Porter.

The facilities that gradually developed in the plant includes a Press Shop, a dedicated Forge and Foundry Unit, Body Shop, Paint Shop, Engine Manufacturing and Car Assembly Units. The Uttarpara Plant has so far rolled out 800,000 Passenger Cars (Ambassador & Contessa), 25,000 Utility Vehicles (Trekker diesel) and 86,000 Commercial Vehicles.

In the year 1991, the heavy engineering division of Hindustan Motors Ltd., which was engaged in the manufacturing of crane, dumper, shovel, etc., was separated from the main factory and established as an independent company, Hyderabad Industries Ltd (HIL). Till the year 2005, HIL was under the ownership of Birla Group. In the year 2005, it was sold to a separate Industrial Group and was renamed Titagarh Wagon Ltd (TWL).
